Aloha friends and mahalo for coming to signwithcourtney! :) :) :)

Welcome to signwithcourtney! I’m so excited that you have decided to join me today. On this site you will find various things that I hope will interest you. Whether you are currently or have been in one of my classes, know me as a friend or acquaintance, or have just discovered me online, I am glad. πŸ™‚

If you are new to signing and interested in getting started, I suggest that you start off in my Beginning American Sign Language class which is divided up by weeks. In this class, I have pulled from my own knowledge and various signing books to create my own curriculum. I invite you to follow along as a member of my online class. Each week I will upload what was taught that week as soon as I can (schedule allowing). Feel free to watch these videos on your own, with a friend or your family, or even in a group. The best way for you to succeed in signing is to practice. Practicing is much easier when you have someone else to sign with, so grab a friend and get learning!

I also have a class, titled American Sign Language 1, that I previously taught using the book A Basic Course in American Sign Language which can be purchased from Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Basic-Course-American-Sign-Language/dp/0932666426 or your local bookstore. In this class, I taught through the first half of the book. In American Sign Language 2, I am using the same book and teaching through the second half of the book.

I have to say that I am not the biggest fan of the book that I taught through for American Sign Language 1 and 2, but it was what I was given for the first time I taught the class and it sufficed. If you are one of those people who loves to have hard copies of things, I would suggest going to your local bookstore and choosing a good American Sign Langugage Dictionary. That way you have a visual for the signs that you want to learn. If I were you, I would suggest just going through the tutorials until you have thoroughly learned them and just keep practicing. If you are techie like me, I would suggest visiting http://www.aslpro.com which is a great, free, online American Sign Langugage dictionary.

On this site, you will also find various song tutorials that you are welcome to learn at any point during your signing journey. You will also find more songs taught during the classes. My new format for teaching the songs involves me teaching the signs and practicing signing them without music, then signing with the music while talking through it, and then signing the finished version of the song.

I also love doing dramas! You will also find various skits that I have directed or participated in. Some of them even involve signing! πŸ™‚ I invite you to watch them for enjoyment as well as to learn them and teach them.

I am also a writer of songs, poems, stories, and devotionals. I used to be a staff writer and later editor for a Christian newspaper at my college. I wrote, and still write, various devotionals which I’m sure you will enjoy. I also teach a weekly Bible study for girls and will likely include my teaching notes as well.

Last but not least, signwithcourtney is my first site to which I will be linking all of my videos that are posted on http://www.youtube.com/shineandsparkle

  2. Thanks so much for posting the asl classes online! I’ve been learning mostly through start-american-sign-language.com but it makes it so much easier when someone is ACTUALLY showing me the sign and giving pointers and explanations. I also love that there are real people asking the same kinds of questions I would. I really appreciate your effort to inform. My sign language ability and confidence has progressed tremendously.

I also love the fact that you love Jesus and you that you interpret worship music. My goal is to be able to not only communicate through sign but to also sign and interpret worship music-so you’re pretty much my hero. lol

    Thanks a bunch.

  3. Hi Courtney! I am so excited to have found your website! I must tell you that I think the Lord placed your ad on youtube in just the right spot for me to see it this morning as I was searching for different versions of a scripture for a children’s book that I have in mind. In high school(early 80’s!), I had a younger friend who was deaf who tried teaching me some sign language, and I took a class or two at our church. I also dated someone whose sister was deaf, and praise Jesus, she just went home to be with him a couple of months ago. Today, I remember a little of what I learned back then which was very little, but have always had a deep
desire to learn sign language to be able to speak to others who are deaf. Just about a month ago I took out a little ASL handbook to try and go through it, but found it difficult without seeing someone actually perform the signs. Anyway, I listened to a few of your classes, and I believe they are just what I need!
I am a paraprofessional at a junior high school, a part-time hairstlylist, an online student at Northwestern State University in Louisiana, and a wife, and mother of three daughters! I am very busy, especially during the school year so I am really hoping to go through as many of your classes as possible this summer, and maybe even teach my daughters some of what I am learning. I know this is a long entry, but I felt it necessary to tell you thanks so very much! And, I believe that God is using you to help others learn to sign. Your classes so far have been easy to follow and the little pointers you give help me to remember them! God bless you abunduntly!
